How to look after your carving.
Regarding the upkeep of your carving, my advice is to oil it every 4 - 6 months. It is very quick to oil but it is very important that it is done on a dry day as the oil needs at least 4 hours to dry before getting wet again.
Using a big paint brush, coat the oil on generously. It's never a bad idea to oil it more often in the summer. This protects the carving from UV damage, keeps the elements from penetrating the piece and also helps the drying process to happen slowly. I use Barrenttine Danish Oil.
Once in place, have the base of your carving lifted a couple of centimetres off the ground with three small stones/blocks underneath to aerate the bottom of the carving. I find flower pot feet work well.
